Jason Galvin did two tours in Afghanistan and he was on a b@it run on Thursday. That is when he spotted the eagle dangling upside down from a rope it got tangled in. It had been there for more than two days according to Galvin since the bird was hanging from the tree about 75 feet off the ground.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Rush City police and fire departments were called by the neighbors. But they were told that there was nothing the agencies could do as the eagle was way too high on the tree. At one point Galvin joked that he might have to shoot the eagle down. His wife responded ‘that’s what you’re going to do’. Galvin took nearly 150 shots from a .22 caliber rifle and spent 90 minutes as he mowed the three branches, and finally the rope, holding up the eagle.
He informed the station that he has to wait ‘for the right shot’ because it was too windy. He ran the idea by Minnesota DNR conservation officer, Phil Mohs before tarted shooting. He is the one who gave him the go-ahead after realizing the eagle would surely die if left in the tree anyway. As Galvin’s last shot hit the branch, the underbrush below the tree helped break the eagle’s fall.
