This is not just a bull f!*ght but a festival to in Japan unlike Spanish bull f!*ght. Ushi-oni with the bull head is the Japanese devil and their body may vary time to time. In Uwajima Ushi-oni is considered as their protective symbol. This bull fight in Japan which also called Bull sumo or togyo is meant to be started from 16oos in Okinawa. Some legend claim that in Shimane it got started around 13th century. There is Yokozuna champion rank in this event like that in sumo. When the bull start fighting coaches stands close to their relative bull and tends to ensure safety in case if something go wrong during the fight.Unlike Sumo this Ushi-zumo or bull sumo can go for long time in every new time.
To separated in two team and to make it recognizable the bulls are tied with red and white ribbons on their tails.This red and white is the tradition of rivalry in Japan. This tradition is believed to be started since Gempai war (II80-II85). It is also said that two rival families that is also samuries families bore red and white banners in Japan. During the f!*ght injuries may occur but most of the time they are non threatening. The bulls can continue fighting as long as both of them returns to the fray. The bull which gets the victory gets little celebration party and the party that lose leaves the ground.
